Cross
Training:
If your schedule doesn't allow for gym-visits, cross training
is a great benefit to your child's system. Read on to see how cross
training might help give your skills a BOOST…
California
affords us wonderful weather to get outdoors and run and play. Any
activity will be a benefit to them physiologically and emotionally.
They will naturally feel better, and will definitely feel better upon
returning to their gymnastic routine.
Effects of detraining can inhibit improvement significantly. In our
team students, detraining of muscles and respiratory function can
occur within 2-4 days (as most of them experienced over Thanksgiving
break). In our class students, a noticeable difference can occur over
2 weeks. This is why students will usually complain of body and muscle
soreness upon returning, and their skills might not come as easily
to them.
Any sport where they are running, jumping, moving etc. for long periods
of time can maintain and even help endurance levels. The quality of
their workouts can improve as well with increased endurance. Soccer
is a great cross-over sport. This sport combines constant running
(or chasing of the ball), combined with the coordination of aiming
and kicking. It takes mental and physical concentration and really
boosts reaction time. Soccer also produces an increase in leg strength,
which all gymnasts and tumblers need to jump those back-handsprings
and back-tucks over. Of course there are many sports that your kids
can play which will definitely give them a boost,
and help them cross-over to gymnastics classes with ease.
